The Partnership for Public Service is seeking current students or recent graduates to join our team and contribute to our mission.

• Are you a student or recent graduate of an undergraduate or graduate program?
• Are you passionate about public service?
• Are you looking for an opportunity to develop your skills and gain valuable experience?
• Are you looking for a paid position in the heart of Washington, D.C.?
Then we're interested in hearing from you!

Current Openings
We are currently seeking applications for Fall 2008 for the following teams:

Business Development/Fundraising
The Development team coordinates fundraising and donor outreach at the Partnership. Activities touch corporations, foundations and individual donors. This involves cultivating and maintaining relationships with people from every sector and thinking creatively about how to better reach certain constituencies and engage new contacts. Working with our Development team, the Fellow will be responsible for researching and coordinating outreach to prospective supporters, assisting in cultivating sponsor support of Partnership events, and working with new and existing contacts at large corporations interested in sponsoring one of the Partnership’s projects or joining our Private Sector Council – the Partnership for Public Service’s corporate membership component. The Fellow for this team will work on a team of development professionals and will take on responsibility for several activities upon which the organization’s financial success is dependent.

Communications
The Communications team publicizes the organization’s research and programmatic activities to the news media and the general public. The team also works to educate the public about federal workforce issues. The Communications Fellow monitors news coverage, manages the Partnership’s news clippings archive, assists in building media lists, helps create and send the Partnership’s daily electronic newsletter, writes content for radio PSAs, speeches, newsletters, Monster and HotJobs Web site articles, provides support to the Communications team at events, and performs related tasks as needed. This is a terrific opportunity for those interested in communications and media and who are eager for the opportunity to build their public relations portfolio and develop marketable experience representing an organization to the public.

Education and Outreach
The Call to Serve team carries out the Partnership’s education and outreach activities, with particular emphases on reaching job seekers on college campuses and on connecting campus career professionals with federal recruiters. The team’s work ranges from developing and disseminating educational materials to working with college campuses on outreach efforts and events. You will play a critical role by assisting with research and development of outreach materials as well as with the day-to-day aspects of program upkeep, event planning, and material dissemination. If you are interested in leveraging your experiences as a student to contribute to the Partnership’s efforts to reach college and university students, this is a great opportunity for you. Check out calltoserve.org and makingthedifference.org to see some of the outreach materials this team works on.

Event Planning
The Partnership’s annual events calendar includes two black-tie galas, a federal job fair, plus press conferences and other events to release research reports and announce new initiatives. The Events Fellow will support members of the Communication and Events team in planning and executing these events, including venue logistics, invitations and registration. In addition, he/she will help manage the Partnership’s Service to America Medals (servicetoamericamedals.org), the premier awards program for honoring federal employees. This team is best served by an individual who has interest or experience in event planning, is outgoing, detail oriented and a team player, and has excellent writing, organization and oral communication skills.

Government Affairs
The Government Affairs team represents the Partnership on Capitol Hill and before the executive branch. The Team advocates for legislation that will bring about policy changes and human capital reform, educates decision-makers on civil service issues and works to engage key policymakers in Partnership activities. The Government Affairs Fellow will have the opportunity to learn about the legislative process by tracking current legislation, drafting correspondence for the Hill, attending congressional hearings, researching and writing memos on federal workforce issues and relevant legislation and participating in the planning and staffing of key Partnership events (e.g., the Service to America Medals and the Annual Summer Intern Event).

Nonprofit Management/Accounting
The Executive Vice-President oversees a team responsible for the management and administration of the Partnership. Fellows will gain experience in Non-Profit Management, Accounting, Human Resources and Database Management. Working with the Administration team has proven to be an especially rewarding experience for Business and Accounting majors who wish to take on a significant amount of responsibility handling the accounts of a financially well-footed organization and to gain hands-on experience with accounting programs such as FinancialEdge and database management programs such as Raiser’s Edge. No special accounting knowledge required.

Selection Process
Application review for Fall 2008 Fellowships will begin on July 18, 2008. For full consideration, apply by July 31, 2008.

Within one month of receipt of your application you should expect to hear from the Fellowship Coordinators — likely via email — regarding the determination of your application and the possibility of an interview (including telephone interviews). If you need to check the status of your application, please feel free to send an email inquiry to fellows@ourpublicservice.org or to call (202) 775-9111.

We anticipate Fall 2008 Fellows beginning work on or around Monday, September 1, 2008. We will work with individuals who require a start date other than September 1st for academic or work-related reasons.

Council of the Southern Mountains
Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program
Mentors Needed!

Why a mentor?
From time to time, everyone has needed a mentor. We have all needed someone to help us discover our strengths, our unique gifts and our purpose. Mentors listen. They teach, they play and they spend time just being there for someone. Mentors help us get the skills we need to succeed. Who needs them? We all do.

Mentors through the Council of Southern Mountains
The Council of Southern Mountains recently received grant money to assist in linking mentors with young people ages 4 to 18 who have a parent involved with the federal or state correctional system. The parents may be incarcerated, on probation, reporting to a day report center or otherwise involved with the correctional system.

What will I do as a mentor?
• Listen
• Participate in fun activities
• Provide encouragement
• Provide examples
• Help with school work
• Network

We ask those volunteering to be mentors to commit at least one year to the life of a young person. This is an excellent opportunity for Master’s level field research, or undergraduate internships for undergrads.

How do I get started?

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities

What Is the Workforce Recruitment Program?

The Workforce Recruitment Program for College Students with Disabilities (WRP) is a resource to connect public and private sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workforce. Employers seek to fill both temporary and permanent positions in a variety of fields.

Myths, stereotypes, and misconceptions about people with disabilities often stand in the way when people with disabilities look for jobs, resulting in a high rate of unemployment. Statistics show that people with disabilities from minority backgrounds encounter even greater difficulty in obtaining work. The WRP aims to eliminate this workplace discrimination one student, one employer, and one job at a time.

Who Is Eligible to Participate in the WRP?

An applicant for the program must
* have a substantial disability
* be a United States citizen
* be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning on a substantially full-time basis (unless the severity of the disability precludes the student from taking a substantially full-time load) to seek a degree OR
* be enrolled in such an institution as a degree-seeking student taking less than a substantially full-time load in the enrollment period immediately prior to graduation OR
* have graduated from such an institution within the past year

What Does the WRP Offer to Colleges and Universities?

The WRP provides a unique opportunity for colleges and universities to
* tap into a system that has been successfully placing students with disabilities in summer and permanent jobs in the public and private sectors for several years, at no cost to the school, the student, or the employer
* bring together the resources of their disability services and career services offices to promote more effectively the job seeking skills and career readiness of their students with disabilities
* provide their students with disabilities a chance to grow personally and professionally through participation in this nationwide program

What Does the WRP Offer to Eligible Students?

The WRP is an excellent way for students with disabilities in all fields of study to
* market their abilities to a wide variety of potential employers across the United States
* sharpen their interviewing skills during a required one-on-one meeting with a WRP recruiter
* gain valuable skills, experience, and contacts on the job
* prove that people with disabilities can be excellent employees

How Does the Program Work?

The WRP operates on the following timeline:
* By mid-September, the schedule of recruitment visits to schools is confirmed.
* From mid-January through mid-February, recruitment visits, which include 30-minute personal interviews with individual students, are conducted.
* By late March, a data base composed of student information gathered during recruitment visits is made available to employers in the public and private sectors.
* Once the data base is released, interested employers make direct contact with students about temporary and permanent job offers. The data base is active for one year.

The WRP is co-sponsored by the Office of Disability Employment Policy and the Department of Defense, with support from other federal agencies.

Providing an integrated academic and work experience in a comparative and global context, the 10 or 15-week program will be offered each semester, starting in spring 2008. Each term will begin with ten days in Washington, D.C., including an orientation, academic work, and other programming. At the end of this seminar in D.C., students will fly to England, where, for the remainder of the semester or summer term, they will complete a full-time internship, academic course, and other programming.

This program has extraordinary features. These include the unique combination of settings – the capitals of the United States and the United Kingdom - and the many opportunities the internships, academic course and additional programming will provide.

The Washington Center is now accepting applications for the summer and fall 2008 terms. For more information:

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is also pleased to announce its new Washington D.C. - Monterrey Internship Program. Providing an integrated academic and work experience in a comparative context, this exciting 10-week program will be offered during the summer of 2008.

The Program will begin in late May with a ten-day seminar in Washington, D.C., which will include an orientation, academic work, and special programming. In early June, you will fly to Monterrey, Mexico and for the next eight weeks, you will complete a full-time internship while taking an academic course and gaining an international perspective through organized events. Participants will take advantage of many educational and social opportunities provided by our partnering university, Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM).

The thematic focus of this new program will be globalization, the emergence of a world in which economic, political, environmental, health, labor and other issues need to be understood and dealt with from multinational perspectives. The program will use Washington, D.C. and Monterrey, Mexico as windows on globalization –the one a major policy center and world capital, the other Mexico’s third largest city, a vital commercial, industrial and tourist center set amidst the Sierra Madre Mountains.

The program will be of special interest to students wishing to learn about international business and trade and the emerging economies of Mexico and other Latin American countries. The city of Monterrey affords an especially broad array of internships in business and industry, with both U.S. - and Mexico – based concerns. Applications are welcome from students of all majors and interests, however, as there is a wide range of internship opportunities.

Basic skills in written and spoken Spanish – equivalent to at least one year of university-level instruction in the language - are required. English will be spoken at most internship sites, but some Spanish will be, as well. The students’ needs will be determined by an online assessment administered once they are accepted into the program.

Cross-Cultural Solutions

As a Cross-Cultural Solutions volunteer, you’ll work side-by-side with local people to help achieve important community objectives. The volunteer work is with carefully selected Partner Programs, all of which are dynamic and inspiring community-led initiatives. These include orphanages and childcare centers, schools, health clinics and hospitals, homes for the elderly, centers for people with disabilities, and other community organizations. By working with Partner Programs on projects that each local organization has defined and set up, you will have the opportunity to directly contribute to the objectives of the local community.

Volunteers staying 2 to 12 weeks complete a Skills and Interests Survey, which helps our in-country staff to match you with a local Partner Program. This ensures that you are volunteering in a project that interests you and that the local Partner Programs can also benefit from your work. However, if you’re volunteering for just one week (Insight Abroad), the volunteer work is a group project, structured with the needs of the local community in mind and the goal of accomplishing the project within a week.
