What is the difference between an internship and practicum?
Internships are typically 3-6 credit hours and practicum requirements are 9-15 credit hours. Students usually register for the practicum courses during the senior year when most of the required courses of the degree program have been completed. However, students may also begin the practicum during the junior year if approved by the Faculty Mentor.

I'm only a Freshman/Sophomore. Should I be thinking about a career already?
Yes! MSU encourages students to begin exploring career options as soon as possible.  Please utilize the Career Services Center website, as well as, other sources of information (MSU Library, Internet, career books, current industry/market trends, latest business news, etc.).  However, you may not apply for a practicum until you have completed the prerequisite courses within your major field of study.   

What do I wear to....?

  • Career Fair - Business Professional
  • Mock Interviews - Business Professional
  • Workshops - Business Casual
  • Company Presentations - Business Casual

Business Professional: Suit for men and women.

Business Casual:  Khaki's and Polo or Blouse, a shirt and tie for men or a sweater for women.

Will Career Services find a job for me?
The Career Services Center is here to assist students in their job search. Job announcements and practicum opportunities are posted on the Center’s website, and hard copy notices posted on the Job Bulletin Board outside Room 303 of Carter Hall.  Please schedule an appointment with the Director of Career Services to assist you with your job search efforts.

How do I begin my job search?
Students are encouraged to utilize the Career Services Center early in their collegiate careers. Working part-time or participating in a practicum provides for a wonderful means of obtaining job experience and networking with individuals in a particular industry.

I don't have a resume. Where do I start?
Please utilize the links on the Career Services Center website to learn about preparation of cover letters, resumes, interviewing, thank you letters, and etc..  Once you have studied resume formats and prepared a draft, please feel free to schedule an appointment with the Director of Career Services.

Who can attend the MSU Career Fair?
Any student, alumni, or potential students are welcome to attend the MSU Career Fair and speak with potential employers. The fair provides students with an excellent opportunity for career exploration. Please feel free to ask questions of organizational representatives about academic preparation, work experience, skills and qualifications essential to your career field. Employer representatives really want to talk with you!

What type of companies will attend the MSU Career Fair?
Organizations attending the fair will range from large to small corporations, non-profit, city, state, and federal agencies.

What types of jobs are companies recruiting for during the MSU Career Fair?
Generally, companies will be recruiting for full-time positions. However, there are a number of companies that may also offer part-time jobs and practicum opportunities. Don’t hesitate to ask employer representatives about possible job opportunities, even if they are not listed.

How do I prepare for the MSU Career Fair?
It is highly recommended that you bring multiple copies of your resume to give to organizational representatives.  The Career Services Center will notify MSU students (via email and the Center’s website) of the final tally of organizations coming to the Career Fair.

What is the dress code for the MSU Career Fair?
It is recommended students should dress in professional business attire.  Remember, you may not be provided with a second chance to make a first impression.
